Memory Loss

The avid readers here may recall my Hasselblad Hassle of recent months - a series of unfortunate events brought about as a direct consequence of choosing unsuitable/fake SD memory cards for my X1Dii-50c medium format body. The last instalment saw me ordering the holy grail of SanDisk memory cards from a national retailer, and being told they were on backorder due to the worldwide shortage.

Well, it appears that the aforementioned cards are now officially unavailable due to the fact that AI data centres have devoured all the available/future solid state memory in their attempt to make humans redundant, and to project about seven people into the realm of quadrillionaire territory. My order was cancelled, and my deposit returned with an apology.

The prices of both solid state storage, and RAM have soared as the availability has gradually dried up. My long time go-to supplier - Crucial - has decided to shut-shop - and it seems that everybody is being forced onto Amazon for their overpriced memory supplies. I wouldn’t touch Amazon to buy such products with a bargepole after my recent experiences, as it seems that a significant chunk of the solid state items they, and their affiliates sell on the platform are fakes. Consequently, I’m going to stick with the Sony cards that are distinctly unrecommended for my camera.

I may still end up selling the whole kit (once it’s paid for), or use it for the odd personal project as was originally intended. As always though, the ultra-wealthy win.
